The measure affects thousands of boxes distributed across several states; here’s which ones
Walmart has recalled approximately 10,000 boxes of its Great Value brand apple juice in various regions of the United States due to the detection of elevated levels of inorganic arsenic, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The decision was made following an investigation that revealed the product contained arsenic above the levels permitted in industry guidelines.
The product's manufacturer, Refresco Beverages US Inc., based in Florida, voluntarily recalled the juice on August 15, classifying it as a Class II recall. According to the FDA, this classification indicates that the use or exposure to the product could cause adverse health consequences that are temporary or medically reversible, with a low probability of serious effects.
The affected juice was distributed in nearly 30 U.S. states, including Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, and Illinois. The recalled boxes are marked with an expiration date of December 28, 2024, and the code CT89-6 on the bottles.
The FDA emphasized that "all arsenic is toxic to humans, with inorganic arsenic being more toxic than organic arsenic." The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classifies inorganic arsenic as a known human carcinogen, meaning it can cause cancer. Short-term exposure to high levels of inorganic arsenic can cause nausea, vomiting, bruising, and numbness or a burning sensation in the hands and feet. In adults, prolonged exposure is associated with skin disorders and an increased risk of skin, bladder, and lung cancers, as well as cardiovascular diseases.
A Walmart spokesperson stated that "the health and safety of our customers is always a top priority," adding that the product has been removed from the affected stores and that they are working with the supplier to investigate the issue.
To date, no injuries have been reported in connection with the consumption of this apple juice, and the FDA has not provided specific recommendations for affected consumers. However, it is advised that those who have purchased the product in the mentioned states should avoid consuming it.
This incident underscores the importance of maintaining rigorous and continuous control over food products distributed on a large scale, ensuring that any potential risks are effectively managed to protect consumer health.
