The municipal authorities stated that they will respect their right to apply for asylum, while those from the US reaffirmed that they only accept appointments through CBP One, an application with various flaws.

A small group of around 30 migrants from different nationalities are camping at the entrance to the pedestrian gate of the San Ysidro port, waiting to be attended to by border officials, as they say they have been unable to secure an appointment through the CBP One application.

According to the Tijuana City Council, the length of stay for these individuals will depend on how quickly they are attended to by US authorities, but the municipality may "intervene with humanitarian and protection assistance" if necessary, said Enrique Lucero, Director of Migrant Assistance.

The official explained that "every day there are 300 appointments through the El Chaparral port of entry for migrants waiting for a humanitarian permit, and since this application started on January 18th, more than 23,000 people have entered through this border."

The authorities from the US and Mexico have reiterated that the only way the northern country is accepting appointments for humanitarian asylum is through CBP, with possible exceptions for those who cannot read or write and only speak an indigenous language, those facing evident and verifiable persecution in Tijuana that puts their lives at risk, individuals with disabilities, or those with chronic illnesses not treatable in our country.
