Seizures include fentanyl, methamphetamines, and cocaine in different locations and vehicles
The San Diego Field Office has seized narcotics with a total value of $7.8 million. During the week leading up to Memorial Day, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers made significant seizures of dangerous drugs at various points of entry.
On May 18, at the San Ysidro port of entry, 36 packages were discovered hidden in different parts of a vehicle, containing powdered fentanyl, fentanyl pills, and methamphetamines, with an estimated value of $305,200.
On May 19, at the Tecate cargo facilities, 50 packages of cocaine were found in the gas tank of a vehicle, with an approximate value of $2 million.
On May 19, at the Calexico port of entry, 78 packages of fentanyl pills hidden in various parts of a vehicle were seized, valued at $3 million.
On May 19, at the Otay Mesa port of entry, five packages of methamphetamines were discovered in the subframe of a vehicle, valued at $100,600.
On May 20, at the Calexico port of entry, three packages of methamphetamines were extracted from the subframe of a vehicle, with an estimated value of $100,600.
On May 23, at the Calexico port of entry, six packages of methamphetamines were found in a traveler's backpack, with a value of $16,390.
On May 23, at the San Ysidro entrance, 40 packages of fentanyl pills were seized in the rear doors and gas tank of a vehicle, with a value of $2,101,200.
On May 24, at the San Ysidro entrance, 30 packages of methamphetamines were discovered in the spare tire of a vehicle, with a value of $133,760.
CBP's San Diego Field Operations Director, Sidney Aki, commended the work of the officers and emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant and detecting suspicious travel patterns. Additionally, it was mentioned that over 150 people die daily in the United States from synthetic opioid overdoses derived from fentanyl, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Overall, the estimated value of the narcotics seized by CBP officers at the San Diego Field Office amounts to $7,815,150. The travelers were turned over to Homeland Security Investigations for further investigation, and the associated narcotics and vehicles were confiscated by CBP officers.
