The Case of Agent Ana Sofía López Osuna, Imprisoned in San Diego for Attempted Drug Trafficking

Agent Ana Sofía López Osuna, affiliated with the regional prosecutor's office in Tijuana, Baja California, was arrested in San Diego after being found in possession of several kilograms of cocaine.

The former agent will have her hearing on July 20th and will remain detained at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in San Diego, awaiting presentation before federal authorities. Regarding this arrest, Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila responded that they are waiting for the charges to be brought against the implicated agent, who worked with the chief prosecutor, Édgar Mendoza Razo. The governor also stated that she is in communication with the U.S. Consul General in Tijuana, Tom Reott.

Exactly one year ago, Octavio Andree Espino Torres, secretary of the state's attorney general, was also subjected to inspection at the San Ysidro border crossing. They found 45 packages of methamphetamine, equivalent to 34 kilograms of the substance, in his vehicle; despite his attempt to dissociate himself from the situation, Espino Torres is currently a fugitive.

Officials in Tijuana warn of the phenomenon of "blind mules," individuals whom cartels use, without their knowledge, for the transportation of narcotics. In some cases, even the victims' offices have been used to store the shipments.

Former Governor Jaime Bonilla, openly in conflict with Marina del Pilar Ávila, referred to the situation in Baja California as a "failed state where organized crime is the government."

This statement resonates with the evidence presented by AC Consultores, which identified Baja California as one of the states with the highest criminal presence in Mexico, as all its municipalities are under the control of criminal groups.

Other Cases

In April 2022, a widely circulated video confession emerged. Ramsés Zataraín, a man with visible signs of torture and bound hands, confessed his involvement in the execution of two young people in Mexicali due to drug trafficking conflicts. In the recording, Zataraín implicated his brother, a public official in the Prosecutor's Office, as his protector.

His brother, Rigoberto Zataraín, was the coordinator of public ministries at the Prosecutor's Office's Inspectorate at the time of the incident. Ramsés' body was discovered abandoned next to a narcomanta on a local highway.
