The lifeless body of a woman was discovered in a domestic freezer inside a residence in San Diego over the weekend.

San Diego police report that "out-of-town" relatives alerted them on Friday after discovering a lifeless body inside a freezer in the house they were visiting in Allied Gardens.

Authorities are now attempting to identify the deceased, while the coroner's office determines the cause of death, according to the police.

Due to the "unusual location" of the body, the homicide unit of the department is handling the investigation. However, at this time, it is unclear whether foul play or traumatic injuries were involved in the death.

"Detectives continue to gather information to understand what happened and why the body was inside the freezer," stated the San Diego police.
