Approval Granted for $1 Billion Investment in Bike and Pedestrian Lanes Across California and in San Diego. The investment is expected to span over a period of 4 years.

One of the projects began this year and is nearing completion in Carmel Valley, where a bike lane is being extended under Interstate 5.

Cyclists along the bike lane between State Route 56 and Interstate 5 have recently been dealing with detours, and currently, they have to share the road in Carmel Valley with vehicles. When the work is complete, the tunnel under Interstate 5 will connect the two bike lanes and allow cyclists to avoid traffic. The project includes connecting under the I-5 bridge through the Penasquitos Lagoon.

Authorities announce that the purpose of the bike lanes is to get people out of their cars. Currently, in San Diego County, around one percent of people travel by bicycle, approximately two percent travel by tram, and approximately five percent take the bus.

The grand opening of the bike tunnel in Carmel Valley is planned for May.
