Highway 1 has experienced frequent closures due to landslides, mudflows, and rockslides during inclement weather.

Over the weekend, a section of California's Highway 1 on the central coast collapsed due to heavy rains, near the Rocky Creek Bridge, south of Monterey. This incident led to the closure of the highway, leaving motorists stranded in the Big Sur area.

The state's Department of Transportation closed the highway in both directions as engineers assessed the damage. However, by Sunday noon, it was determined that the northbound lane was safe, and motorists were allowed to pass under escort.

Around 300 cars were waiting to travel north when the first convoy was conducted. Some stranded motorists spent the night in their cars or took shelter at the nearby Big Sur Lodge.

Highway 1, famous for its scenic route, has experienced frequent closures due to landslides, mudflows, and rockslides during inclement weather. Additionally, a slow-moving storm brought heavy rains to lower elevations and over a foot of snow to Sierra Nevada ski resorts near Lake Tahoe.

The storm also affected Southern California, with forecasts of rain and possible thunderstorms extending until Monday. Residents are urged to avoid traveling through affected areas, especially in parts of Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Los Angeles counties, where lightning and damaging winds may occur.
