San Diego County has agreed to pay $1.1 million to settle a lawsuit filed by the mother of Alan Arguelles, a 16-year-old who died from a fentanyl overdose at Kearny Mesa Juvenile Detention Facility. Arguelles was found dead in his cell on September 8, 2021, with fentanyl in his system. A report revealed that probation officers failed to conduct required checks on Arguelles and did not prevent fentanyl from entering the facility. 

Despite a policy for checking detainees every 15 minutes, Arguelles' death went unnoticed for hours. The report also noted that the staff was aware of illegal substances in the center and failed to adequately monitor Arguelles, who had a history of mental health issues. The lawsuit claims that Arguelles should have been closely monitored due to his overdose risk.
