Lawmakers demand immediate action
Lawmakers and animal advocates are calling on California to take action following the troubling findings of an investigation published by the Los Angeles Times into the underground puppy resale market. The report reveals that some resellers buy dogs in bulk from large-scale breeders in the Midwest and resell them as locally bred. This practice has misled consumers and resulted in sick pets and costly veterinary treatments.
Senator Tom Umberg called the situation alarming and urged the California Department of Agriculture to stop destroying import veterinary records, which could help trace the origins of the dogs and protect buyers. Governor Gavin Newsom also expressed concern and committed to working on measures to close legal loopholes.
Despite laws aimed at protecting consumers from purchasing sick puppies, the lack of oversight in import records has allowed the illegal market to flourish. Greater control and coordination between state and local agencies are demanded to prevent unscrupulous sellers from continuing to operate unchecked.
