The state of California has ordered schools to restrict the use of mobile phones due to the increase in distractions and anxiety problems among students. Governor Gavin Newsom signed a law that requires school districts to implement cellphone policies by July 2026, aiming to improve focus on learning and student well-being. The law, called the Phone-Free Schools Act, allows schools to decide whether to completely ban the use of cellphones, but at the very least, they must restrict it.

Newsom emphasized that excessive cellphone use increases anxiety and mental health issues, so this legislation will help students concentrate on their academic and social development, rather than being glued to their screens.

The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) approved an even stricter policy, banning cellphones during the entire school day starting in January 2025. This law is part of similar initiatives in other states such as Florida, Indiana, and Ohio, which have already taken measures to limit cellphone use in classrooms.

Although California's law is flexible in some aspects, it allows exceptions for emergencies or students who need the devices for medical reasons. However, cellphone use will continue to be restricted to minimize distractions in class.
