San Diego residents will soon see relief on their electric bills, thanks to the second climate credit of the year. This credit, known as the "California Climate Credit," is part of the Cap-and-Trade Program, which requires major polluters to pay for their emissions. Starting in October, households will automatically receive a $78.22 credit on their electric bills. This benefit is applied twice a year, in April and October. The program aims to help utility customers offset energy costs during the transition to a more sustainable future.

Since 2014, families receiving energy from San Diego General Electric (SDG&E) have accumulated a total of $804 in climate credits. Statewide, the program’s benefits have exceeded $10 billion, providing relief to millions of households.

The climate credit is part of California’s effort to combat climate change, redistributing the benefits of the Cap-and-Trade Program to residents. Last year, the Commission expedited the credit distribution to alleviate high winter bills, but in 2024, the distribution schedule will return to its normal April and October cycle.
