California Governor Gavin Newsom has warned of the economic consequences the state would face if Donald Trump follows through on his promise to impose a 25% tariff on Mexican imports.

During a visit to the Otay Mesa border crossing near San Diego on December 5, Newsom highlighted that Mexico is California's main trading partner, accounting for nearly 19% of the state’s exports, which totaled $33.3 billion in 2022, according to the state’s Chamber of Commerce.

Newsom noted that Trump’s tariffs would increase the prices of products such as avocados and tomatoes, while retaliatory tariffs could harm California farmers by reducing foreign demand for grapes, nuts, and dairy products.

“This is one of the largest tax increases in history proposed by Donald Trump,” Newsom stated, emphasizing that California would be the state most affected by these policies.
