Feminist organizations have promoted the "Ley Malena," inspired by the case of saxophonist María Elena Ríos

Fernanda Sánchez, a well-known entrepreneur on social media for her strawberries and cream business, was the victim of a brutal attack involving a corrosive substance thrown at her face, causing severe injuries and partial vision loss in one eye.

The incident occurred while Fernanda was working at her dessert stand alongside her team and her five-year-old daughter. A woman, who had previously visited the business inquiring about a job vacancy, approached to ask for more details. As Fernanda explained the position, the attacker suddenly pulled out a bottle and threw the liquid at her face before fleeing the scene.

In a video shared on her social media, Fernanda recounted the terrifying moment, saying she immediately felt a burning sensation and desperately called for help. Doctors confirmed that the substance caused severe burns to her mouth, nose, ear, and right eye, significantly compromising her vision.

The attack has sparked outrage on social media and within the Tijuana community, prompting Fernanda Sánchez to demand justice and seek support in identifying the perpetrator. "I don't want this to go unpunished," the young entrepreneur stated. She also revealed that this was the second attack against her this year.

Who is Fernanda Sánchez?

Fernanda Sánchez is a resident of Tijuana, Baja California, locally recognized as the owner of Fernandas 99 El Sabor Viral, a popular dessert business known for its strawberries and cream. However, this week, she went viral for a tragic reason—she became the victim of an acid attack.

Fernanda’s case adds to a concerning trend of acid attacks in Mexico, a form of gender-based violence that leaves victims with permanent physical and emotional scars. Despite a 2022 reform to the Federal Penal Code imposing sentences of up to 22 years in prison for such crimes, these attacks continue to occur.

Feminist organizations have been pushing for the Ley Malena, inspired by the case of saxophonist María Elena Ríos, who suffered a similar attack in 2019. This initiative aims to increase penalties to up to 30 years in prison and establish a national registry of acid attack victims. The proposed reform specifies that the law applies to substances such as:

- Acid

- Corrosive agents

- Caustic substances

- Irritants

- Toxic chemicals

- Flammable substances

- Any other material causing internal or external injuries

Following the attack, public figures and citizens have expressed their support for Fernanda, demanding a swift investigation and justice for the crime committed against her. Meanwhile, the entrepreneur continues to fight for her recovery and to ensure her case is not forgotten.

Fernanda Sánchez now faces a battle for both her health and her right to justice. "It’s not fair that out of envy or malice, someone would try to destroy you like this," she stated firmly in a message to her followers.
