While more than 59,000 people cross daily from Tijuana to San Diego, local vendors take advantage of the long lines to offer food and tradition just steps away from the American dream

According to data from the U.S. Department of Transportation, known as BTS by its acronym in English, an average of 40,600 vehicles crossed daily from Tijuana’s San Ysidro Port of Entry into San Diego in 2024. Additionally, 18,550 pedestrians made the same border crossing on foot every day.

It’s common knowledge that crossing the border by car can mean waiting for hours plenty of time for hunger to strike.

That’s where local Tijuana vendors come in, seizing the opportunity to set up shop along the long lines with everything from food, ceramics, and clothing to Mexican flags just in case you need a reminder of where you’re from.

Just meters away from the United States, traditional Mexican flavors are offered up flavors that often fade the moment you step into the neighboring country.

That’s how Burritos Biónicos was born fifteen years ago. The small stand can sell up to 100 burritos a day. From six in the morning, their cart is already set up between the lanes, ready to serve your favorite: egg with chorizo, poblano peppers with cheese, breaded meat, or stuffed chili. The fillings vary, catering to all tastes.

"Customers are just like us. They try a burrito, come back the next day for the same one, and the next day they try a new one. We just try to offer the best service," says Luis, who not only hands you your food but also greets you with a big smile and friendly service.

This is just one of many businesses that operate at the territorial edge between Mexico and the United States people working hard every day to make a living, proving their drive and determination to move forward.
