School officials urge calm

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arrested a parent Wednesday morning near an elementary school in Chula Vista, shortly after the morning drop-off period.

The Chula Vista Elementary School District (CVESD) confirmed that the arrest took place off campus near Enrique S. Camarena Elementary and emphasized that it did not occur on school grounds.

"The ICE operation took place outside one of our schools during morning drop-off, but not on district property," said Giovanna Castro, CVESD’s director of communications. "We want to reassure our families that our schools continue to be safe spaces for all students."

As of now, the federal agency has not issued an official statement regarding the incident.

In response, CVESD Superintendent Eduardo Reyes addressed families and staff, reaffirming the district’s commitment to serving all students, regardless of immigration status.

"We have strict protocols in place to prevent unauthorized access to our schools," Reyes stated. "Law enforcement officers are not permitted to interact with students unless there is an emergency or a signed warrant from a judge."
Reyes also shared a list of resources available on the district’s website and encouraged families to have a plan in place in case they are unable to pick up their children.

"Our priority is the safety, education, and well-being of your children," Reyes added. "If you need assistance or have questions, please contact your school’s main office."
