The measure, aimed at regulating parking demand on high-traffic days

Starting in September, parking in downtown San Diego during major events at Petco Park will come at a higher cost. The city will impose a special rate of $10 per hour at meters located within a half-mile radius of the stadium.

The measure, aimed at managing parking demand on high-traffic days, has sparked discontent among some residents. Those living on the edges of the zone say they are nearly a mile away, yet have still been included in the higher-rate area.

The special rate will take effect two hours before the start of an event and last until four hours after it begins. For example, during a Padres game scheduled for 6:40 p.m., the $10-per-hour rate will apply from 4:40 p.m. to 10:40 p.m.

According to a city spokesperson, having different rates on the same block could cause confusion, which is why certain areas were expanded or trimmed within the special zone. There is no specific limit on the size of this zone, and revenue from the fees will go toward the city budget.

Vehicles displaying a disabled placard or license plate will continue to park for free at meters citywide, including within the special event zone during events.
