Severe storms that swept through the state capital toppled more than 300 power poles, leaving much of the city without electricity particularly in the western zone, where the damage was most severe.

The blackout, which lasted more than two days, sparked protests by residents who blocked the Mexicali–Tijuana highway and the road to Santa Isabel for several hours, demanding that power be restored.

Víctor Hugo Delgado Sánchez, the city’s Chief of Staff, reported that in the western area alone at least 40 poles were downed, complicating efforts by the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) to restore service.

“As of 11 a.m. today, more recovery work was expected in the western zone. The blockades were lifted—the one on the Tijuana highway around 11 p.m. and the one in Santa Isabel shortly after 2 a.m.,” the official said.

Delgado acknowledged that there is still no exact estimate of the total damage or a precise timeline for full restoration, but highlighted that CFE crews from Tijuana, Ensenada, Tecate, Rosarito, and even San Luis Río Colorado have joined the repair efforts.

According to the official, once the areas with the largest number of failures are addressed, crews will begin working on specific neighborhoods and isolated communities that remain without power. “We expect to have better news by tomorrow and, throughout the day, continued recovery,” he added.

In the meantime, authorities are maintaining communication with residents through social media and hotlines to field reports.

The weather system, which brought heavy rain and strong winds, left behind widespread infrastructure damage and thousands of families waiting for the restoration of electricity in Mexicali.
