A working group will be set up on Monday to address their demands

On Friday, secondhand goods vendors blocked access to Mexico at the Otay border crossing on two occasions, demanding that customs fees be applied fairly and without arbitrariness.

The demonstrators said they have been unable to bring in merchandise such as furniture, utensils, and household items for a week, resulting in economic losses and additional expenses, including parking fees in the United States.

Customs director Alejandro Robles Segura went to the site to address the protest. Following a dialogue, it was agreed that a working group will be set up on Monday to analyze the situation and discuss possible solutions.

“We only want to pay what is fair; we’re not asking for privileges,” said Miguel, one of the affected vendors. Meanwhile, Edith denounced what she described as arbitrary customs procedures that put at risk the livelihoods of families who depend on this activity.

Although they agreed to pursue dialogue, the vendors warned they will remain organized to monitor compliance with the agreements and reiterated that their sole demand is the application of fair fees.
