A shelter-in-place order was issued for specific piers and access points following the discovery of a suspicious package

Personnel at a portion of Naval Base San Diego were instructed to shelter in place Tuesday morning due to what officials described as a “potential hazardous situation.”

Authorities publicly announced the shelter-in-place order around 10:00 a.m. through the base’s social media channels, stating it applied only to WETSIDE Zone A, from Gates 2 through 7 and Piers 1 through 5. Officials said the order did not affect the DRYSIDE portion of the base.

The area known as the wet side is located west of Harbor Drive and includes the piers, as well as maintenance, support, and supply operations. The dry side refers to the area east of Harbor Drive, which houses military residences, training facilities, and recreational centers.

Officials later confirmed that the “potential hazardous situation” was linked to a suspicious package.

The base lifted the shelter-in-place order around 10:45 a.m. and resumed normal operations.
