City Council agreement will compensate 17 insurance companies for 2024 losses, while more than 1,500 residents continue suing the city seeking damages

The City of San Diego will pay $6.3 million to 17 insurance companies for losses stemming from the January 2024 floods, as hundreds of victims are still awaiting compensation for their own damages.

The settlement was approved in a closed session in November and is set to be ratified at a public meeting. The decision comes as the city faces a projected $100 million budget deficit for the next fiscal year. According to The San Diego Union-Tribune, the city has paid nearly $200 million in unrelated claims between 2019 and 2024.

More than 1,500 residents have filed lawsuits against the city, alleging negligence in maintaining stormwater infrastructure. So far, they have not received direct compensation, and some are facing countersuits from the city. A jury trial is scheduled for Oct. 2.

As they await a resolution, victims such as Greg Montoya say they continue to deal with property damage and live in fear each time it rains. Information from FOX 5/KUSI.
