Vehicles and stores set on fire cause blockages on key highways in Baja California; authorities urge residents to limit travel and exercise caution

On the morning of Sunday, February 22, multiple violent incidents were reported across Baja California, where cargo trucks and other vehicles were set on fire, causing partial blockages on key state highways. Several convenience stores, including Oxxo locations, have also temporarily closed after a store was affected by fire.

One of the first reports came from the highway connecting Mexicali with Tijuana, where an 18-wheeler was intercepted by armed individuals who forced the driver to exit before setting the truck ablaze. Preliminary information indicates that the driver was unharmed.

Hours later, similar incidents were reported on the road linking Tecate with El Sauzal near kilometer 37, where a car was burned after being placed across the highway. The driver in this case also managed to escape safely.

In Tijuana, on Avenida Internacional, a route taxi was pushed into traffic lanes and set on fire, temporarily closing the road toward the city center and disrupting morning traffic. Emergency responders arrived following 911 reports from citizens.

Other vehicle fires were documented in municipalities including Tecate, Ensenada, and San Quintín, prompting alerts at state security coordination meetings.

Although preliminary reports suggest a possible connection between these incidents and news regarding the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, also known as “El Mencho,” leader of the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación, authorities have not officially confirmed a direct link between the events.

Meanwhile, the Municipal Coordination of Civil Protection and Firefighters in Tecate urged the public to reduce travel on roads leading to the “Pueblo Mágico” and to exercise extreme caution for essential trips. Recommendations include observing speed limits, following official instructions, and yielding to emergency vehicles.

No injuries have been reported so far, but investigations are ongoing to determine responsibility for the incidents and clarify whether a connection exists between the various events across the region.

Update: More Vehicles Set on Fire in Tijuana

The wave of violence following the alleged killing of a criminal leader in Jalisco added a new episode in this border city. In the Lindavista neighborhood, near Panteón Jardín in the city center, unknown individuals intercepted a driver, forced him out of his vehicle, and doused the car with gasoline, although they failed to set it on fire.

Hours earlier, a white Nissan Sentra was intentionally set ablaze in front of Simnsa International Hospital, just a few meters from the San Ysidro International Border Crossing. Witnesses reported that the attackers fled after pouring fuel and igniting the vehicle, while nearby citizens and store personnel managed to extinguish the flames with fire extinguishers before the car was completely destroyed.

The area remains cordoned off and secured by municipal police and National Guard personnel. No injuries have been reported, although the roadway remains closed.

Another vehicle was set on fire in the Herrera neighborhood, adding to the series of violent incidents occurring in the city.
