Producers and distributors highlight that spring marks the ideal time to enjoy sweeter, fresher strawberries at better prices across the region
With the arrival of March and the start of spring, the peak strawberry season officially kicks off in San Diego County one of the most anticipated times of the year for both consumers and local agricultural producers.
According to information shared with Baja News by a representative of Produce Depot Wholesale, a San Diego based fruit and vegetable distribution company, this month signals the beginning of the highest quality and freshest period for locally grown strawberries.
“The period that begins in March is when we strongly recommend purchasing strawberries, as they start reaching their optimal point in flavor, color, and firmness,” the company spokesperson said. While Southern California benefits from nearly year-round production due to its favorable climate, spring consistently delivers the best conditions for peak taste and texture.
Quality, Freshness, and Better Prices
During this season, increased production typically leads to greater availability in grocery stores and markets, along with more competitive pricing. Longer days, mild temperatures, and abundant sunshine help produce strawberries that are sweeter and juicier.
Agricultural specialists recommend selecting berries that are bright red, with fresh green leaves and no visible blemishes. They also advise washing strawberries only right before consumption to preserve freshness and extend shelf life.
Impact on the Local Economy
San Diego is part of one of California’s most important strawberry producing regions. California remains the leading strawberry producing state in the United States, making the spring harvest especially significant for the agricultural sector.
Peak season benefits not only distributors and supermarkets but also farmers, field workers, and small businesses throughout the region. Additionally, this time of year brings an increase in on site picking activities at local farms, drawing both residents and visitors seeking an outdoor experience.
As March ushers in spring, producers and distributors agree: now is the perfect time to enjoy the freshness and quality of locally grown strawberries an iconic regional fruit that continues to win over markets year after year with its flavor and versatility.
