Authorities investigate multiple mailbox break-ins in Del Sur as residents lose postal service over ongoing security failures

The United States Postal Inspection Service said it is actively investigating reports of repeated break-ins targeting community mailboxes, known as cluster box units, including incidents in the Del Sur area of San Diego.

According to reports, numerous homeowners have had their mail service suspended due to “ongoing security failures” linked to the incidents.

The United States Postal Service said mail from affected areas is being held at local post offices, where customers must pick it up in person. The investigation is being led by USPIS, the law enforcement arm of the postal system.

“Mail security is a top priority, and we are working diligently to identify those responsible,” a USPIS spokesperson said.

Authorities are urging anyone who believes they may have been a victim of mail theft to call (877) 876-2455. They also ask residents with video footage or additional information related to the Del Sur incidents to come forward.

As a precaution, residents are advised to collect their mail as soon as possible after delivery and to deposit outgoing mail in blue collection boxes before the final scheduled pickup of the day.

USPS also reminded customers they can sign up for its “Informed Delivery” service to track incoming mail online. In addition, USPIS encourages the public to report any suspicious activity around mailboxes to local law enforcement.

“We appreciate the public’s cooperation as this investigation continues,” the spokesperson added.
