Tijuana-born boxer Jaime Munguía is currently cooperating with anti-doping authorities following the confirmation of exogenous testosterone in his system through a B sample. The substance, banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), is prohibited due to its performance-enhancing effects.

The positive test stems from Munguía’s recent bout against French fighter Bruno Surace, which he initially won by unanimous decision. However, after the doping confirmation, the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) overturned the result, officially recording the match as a “No Contest.”
According to the World Anti-Doping Code, the use of exogenous testosterone may result in a suspension of up to four years. However, if it is proven that the ingestion was unintentional, the penalty may be reduced to between six months and one year.

Possible repercussions for Munguía include:

In 2018, Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez faced a similar controversy after testing positive for clenbuterol ahead of his rematch with Gennady Golovkin. The Nevada Athletic Commission handed him a six-month suspension, citing the likelihood of meat contamination—an issue previously documented in Mexico.

Canelo cooperated fully with authorities and submitted to additional testing, which helped him restore his public image and continue building a successful career as one of boxing’s pound-for-pound elites.

Munguía has already submitted the supplements he used during his training in an effort to prove possible accidental contamination. However, the nature of exogenous testosterone makes such a defense more difficult.
