The war hero had died in the Korean War

After 73 years, the remains of a brave American soldier who lost his life in the Korean War have finally returned to his family for a dignified burial. Army Corporal Luther Herschel Story, who was 18 years old at the time of his disappearance, was identified through DNA testing and will receive a military burial near his hometown of Americus, Georgia.

Corporal Story, remembered for his heroism during the Korean War, is believed to have died in battle on September 1, 1950, while protecting his company's retreat after being wounded. Although his remains were recovered approximately a month later, forensic techniques of the time were unable to identify them.

In April of this year, thanks to DNA samples, the military was able to make a match and confirm Corporal Story's identity. His combat bravery has been recognized, as he is believed to have eliminated or wounded around 100 enemy soldiers during a fierce daytime assault while his company was under attack. However, after that battle, he was never seen alive again.

Corporal Story received the Medal of Honor, the country's highest military honor, for his "conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity" in staying behind and engaging approaching North Korean soldiers near his platoon. The medal was presented to his father in 1951 and is now displayed alongside his portrait at the National Infantry Museum in Georgia.

Corporal Story's funeral, scheduled for next Monday, will feature a police escort accompanying his casket with flashing lights. His return home provides emotional closure for his family, who believed his remains would never be found. His identification has alleviated concerns and brought peace to his loved ones.

The previously unidentified remains of Corporal Story were buried alongside other unknown service members at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Hawaii. However, in 2021, as part of a military effort to identify hundreds of unknown Americans who died in battle, they were discovered and have now been returned to their homeland.

The identification of Corporal Story's remains was announced by President Joe Biden on April 26 during the state visit of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol. This emotional homecoming serves as a reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of those who have served their country and honors the memory of Corporal Luther Herschel Story, whose legacy will endure forever.
