During the early hours of Thursday, a 27-year-old Mexican tourist was sexually assaulted by five men at Campo Marte, near the Eiffel Tower. The Paris prosecutor's office has reported that two of the assailants have been arrested, while three remain at large.

This incident has sparked significant pressure against the administration of Mayor Anne Hidalgo, with demands for the long, tree-lined esplanade to be closed at night, as similar events have occurred in this location before.

"How many sexual assaults and rapes does Anne Hidalgo expect before agreeing to close Campo Marte at night to ensure the safety of Parisians and tourists?" tweeted local leader of the conservative party, The Republicans, Rachida Dati.
