Conflicts trigger epidemic risk due to overwhelmed morgues and massive displacements

The conflict that has been unfolding in Sudan since April between the army and paramilitaries has resulted in the presence of thousands of decomposing corpses in the streets of Khartoum and its surroundings.

Save the Children, a humanitarian organization, warned about the danger of this situation, as the lack of morgue capacity due to power cuts prevents proper handling of the bodies, which could lead to the spread of epidemics.

The violence between the army under the command of General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces (FSR) has so far caused over 3,900 deaths and has left more than four million people displaced and refugees, according to reports from ACLED and the UN.

The humanitarian crisis has worsened in Sudan, where millions of people require urgent humanitarian assistance. In addition to the problems caused by the accumulation of corpses, stagnant waters pose a risk for the spread of diseases such as malaria, dengue, and cholera.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has recorded cases of cholera and measles in various regions of the country. Healthcare infrastructure has also been targeted in attacks, with 35 incidents reported between April and July, resulting in the death of at least 11 people and injuries to 38.
