Material damages are estimated at over $5.6 billion
The devastating wildfires on Maui Island, Hawaii, have claimed the lives of 93 people, making it the deadliest wildfire in the United States in a century. As search and rescue teams face difficulties accessing the affected areas and communication remains a challenge, there are concerns that the number of victims could further increase.
The historic town of Lahaina has been reduced to ruins, and three more bodies were recently discovered. However, it is anticipated that the death toll could rise significantly as broader search efforts are deployed with the assistance of specialized dogs and government support.
Recovery is still in its early stages, with only a small percentage of the affected area inspected so far. Material damages are estimated at over $5.6 billion, and the response for aid and recovery involves collaboration from various levels of government, including the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
With the uncertainty surrounding the total number of victims, it is expected that the death toll will increase in the coming days as intensified search and rescue operations are supported by federal resources.
