Lucy Letby, a 33-year-old British nurse, has been sentenced to life in prison by a court in Manchester, England, for the murder of seven babies and the attempted murder of six others at a Chester hospital between 2015 and 2016. Judge James Goss of the Manchester Crown Court pronounced the sentence, highlighting the "premeditation, calculation, and cunning" in her actions.

During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence that Letby injected air into newborns through intravenous syringes while working at the Countess of Chester Hospital. The nurse was found guilty last Friday and declined to appear in court to hear the verdict and the testimonies of the babies' parents.

The judge noted that the crimes were of an exceptional seriousness and highlighted "a deep malevolence bordering on sadism." Letby was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. In addition to the murders, she was also found guilty of attempting to murder six other babies using different methods, including air injection and insulin poisoning.

The murders occurred between 2015 and 2016, and Letby worked in the neonatal unit of the Countess of Chester Hospital, which cared for babies with various levels of medical needs. The jury in the case took over 110 hours to reach the guilty verdict. Letby's case shocked the United Kingdom, and she is considered the country's most prolific child killer in history.
