Honoring the Heroes of the United States Armed Forces
Veterans Day, known as "Veterans Day," is a day of profound significance in the United States, dedicated to paying tribute to all those who have bravely served in the country's Armed Forces. Celebrated annually on November 11, this day not only commemorates the sacrifice and courage of veterans but also honors the peace that followed the end of World War I.
The importance of this day is such that, according to federal legislation, when November 11 falls on a Saturday, the holiday is observed on the preceding Friday, and if it falls on a Sunday, it is moved to the following Monday, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to participate in the festivities.
The origin of Veterans Day celebration dates back to the end of World War I, which officially concluded on November 11, 1918. One year later, on November 11, 1919, then-President of the United States Woodrow Wilson proclaimed this day as "Armistice Day," aiming to commemorate the anniversary of peace. It was a time to remember the brave who had fought and those who had lost their lives in the Great War.

In 1938, "Armistice Day" became a legal holiday, retaining its original name. However, over time, the focus of the celebration evolved. In the early 1940s, the commemoration expanded to honor all veterans of the United States Armed Forces, not just those who fell in World War I.
Finally, in 1954, through a law, "Armistice Day" acquired its current designation of "Veterans Day."
The celebration of this day takes various forms across the country. Tributes, parades, and local ceremonies are held to express gratitude to veterans for their service. However, one of the most iconic events is the ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, located in Arlington Cemetery just minutes from the capital, Washington, D.C. This solemn ceremony serves as a reminder of the sacrifice of those who gave their lives for the freedom and security of the nation.
It is crucial to note that during federal holidays like Veterans Day, government offices, banks, and some private businesses remain closed in honor of this significant commemoration. It is a day when the nation comes together to express gratitude to all veterans and to remember the fundamental meaning of the peace and freedom that we value so highly.
