"Each one is a business, for each child the government gives me money"

The story of Doña Martha, a Colombian mother with 20 children, has sparked intense controversy on social media after revealing that she considers motherhood a lucrative business, providing her with income from the Colombian government without the need to work outside the home.

"Each one is a business, for each child the government gives me money," said the Colombian mother, whose perception has generated divided opinions in society.

The woman, who frequently becomes pregnant, mentioned that her last pregnancy occurred after a night out and an encounter with a young man. Although the biological father is no longer present in their lives, Martha believes that government assistance compensates for economic difficulties.

"No idea, really, I went out partying and I liked the boy at that party, and that's how it happened, I really don't know where he lives, I don't know him, and I'm not interested either," the woman said.

However, Martha's story has drawn criticism from those who question the ethics of her approach to motherhood and the government's role in supporting a situation that some consider exploitative.

On the other hand, Martha also faces everyday challenges in managing money, acknowledging that sometimes she is forced to provide more modest meals due to financial limitations. Despite these difficulties, she claims that her children understand the situation and adapt to the availability of economic resources.

"It's complicated, sometimes I have to make those pots of soup, I go to the market and get those cheap little bones and make stews, beans for everyone, but when there's no (money) they eat a little. They already know that on the days there's money they eat well, and if not, well, they eat what there is, just a little."

"Really, very little, I have to get the older ones to help me because due to my pregnancy it's complicated (for me to cook and do other household chores). I don't know (where the fathers are), they're those irresponsible fathers who have children."

Furthermore, Martha expressed her concern for the future, especially when her daughters reach adolescence and decide to become independent, leaving her without support to care for the youngest members of the family.

"The girls who are already 12 or 13 years old are growing up, becoming young ladies, and they leave me alone, just like the two older ones did... I'm left without help and besides that, I'm left alone."

Although Martha is reluctant to cease her pregnancies, despite becoming a mother at a young age and not being able to meet all the demands of caring for her numerous children, she emphasizes that she has the support of the community and the church in times of need.
