A report published this week by the Guttmacher Institute, an organization specialized in analyzing abortion issues, revealed that in 2023 there were over 1 million abortions in the USA, with 63% of them resulting from a compound called mifepristone.

El Universal reported that this figure represents a significant increase compared to the 53% recorded in 2020, 39% in 2017, and 17% in 2008.

This is in response to the decision made by the Supreme Court in June 2022 when it overturned the 1973 ruling that had legalized abortion nationwide, and several Republican-led states enacted laws restricting or banning the surgical procedure.

The estimates in the document could be low according to its authors, as they do not account for abortions performed outside of the official healthcare system or abortion pills sent by mail in states with total prohibitions.
