Trump threatens to renegotiate the USMCA and increase tariffs on cars made in Mexico if elected president
Republican candidate Donald Trump warned that he would reopen the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) and increase tariffs on vehicles produced in Mexico if he wins the November elections, as part of his strategy to protect the American automotive industry.
In a speech before the Detroit Economic Club, Trump stated that his administration would notify Mexico and Canada of its intention to invoke the USMCA's renegotiation clause, arguing that this is necessary to counter the growing competition from Chinese vehicles that, according to him, enter the U.S. market via Mexico.

In addition to the potential renegotiation, Trump proposed a package of protectionist measures, including higher tariffs on car imports and tax incentives for automotive companies operating and conducting research in the United States. He assured that these measures would encourage manufacturers to establish themselves on U.S. soil to avoid the "heavy tariffs" his administration would impose.
