The Irish-American cardinal assumes the role of “interim pope” following Francis’s death, leading the transition toward the upcoming conclave

With the passing of Pope Francis, the Catholic Church enters a period of “sede vacante”- a time when the papal seat remains vacant. In the heart of the Vatican, all eyes are now on Cardinal Kevin Joseph Farrell, the camerlengo, who will assume temporary administrative control of the Holy See until a new pope is elected.

Farrell, 78, was appointed to this vital position by Pope Francis himself in 2019. His responsibilities now take on historic significance: from officially certifying the Pope’s death to overseeing the organization of the conclave that will elect his successor.

Born in Dublin in 1947, Farrell has had a long and distinguished career within the Church. He studied in Salamanca and Rome, was ordained in 1978, and carried out much of his pastoral work in the United States, where he became known as a staunch advocate for migrants and social justice.

Before becoming camerlengo, Pope Francis named him Prefect of the Dicastery for the Laity, Family and Life—a role that underscored his alignment with Francis’s reformist vision. His close relationship with the pontiff was evident in the final days of Francis’s life: Farrell accompanied the Pope during his hospitalization and was entrusted with the Pope’s letter of resignation, to be used should his health have rendered him permanently incapacitated.

In accordance with the Apostolic Constitution “Universi Dominici Gregis”; Cardinal Farrell must now:

- Officially certify the Pope’s death (a task he has already fulfilled in an emotional statement),
- Seal the papal apartments and assume custody of the apostolic palaces,
- Organize the conclave, including the logistics for the cardinal electors,
- Administer the temporal goods of the Holy See during the transition.

He will also preside over Pope Francis’s funeral and oversee the mourning period until the cardinals gather in the Sistine Chapel to elect the new pontiff.

As preparations for the conclave unfold, speculation is already mounting over potential successors, including three Spanish cardinals. Although Farrell will not vote in the conclave due to his age—cardinals over 80 are excluded—his role in ensuring a transparent and orderly process remains pivotal.

His duties will conclude once a new pope is chosen, at which point he will deliver a sealed report detailing the election process. Until then, Farrell leads the Vatican through a moment of historic transition.

Gone are the days of traditional rituals—such as tapping the Pope’s forehead with a silver hammer to confirm death. Instead, Farrell represents a more modern, administrative approach, shaped by the very reforms Francis championed. His legacy as an advocate for the marginalized and a promoter of transparency positions him as a bridge between two pontificates, in a Church striving to remain relevant in the 21st century.

As the Catholic world bids farewell to Pope Francis, Cardinal Farrell’s mission is clear: to ensure that the Vatican continues to function and that the conclave honors both tradition and the evolving expectations of a Church in transformation.
