Schools and residences have been evacuated by authorities due to the fuel spill throughout the area

According to the San Diego Police Department, the incident was reported shortly before 4 a.m. in the area of Sculpin Street and Santo Road, located in the Murphy Canyon community.

Based on preliminary information, a Cessna 550 aircraft en route to Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport suddenly fell from the night sky, striking multiple homes and vehicles along its path. At least 15 residences were affected.

Emergency crews responded swiftly to the scene, battling flames fueled by spilled jet fuel. It remains unclear if there are any casualties.

“We have jet fuel everywhere,” said Fire Department Deputy Chief Dan Eddy during a press conference. “Our primary objective right now is to check every home and evacuate all individuals.”

He also described “a massive debris field” in a densely populated neighborhood.

Families in the impact zone were quickly evacuated. A temporary evacuation center has been established at Miller Elementary School, located at 4343 Shields Street, to assist displaced residents.

Scattered fires have already been extinguished.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the cause of the crash. The FAA issued the following statement regarding the incident:

San Diego police and other emergency teams remain at the scene as the investigation continues. Residents are advised to avoid the area while authorities assess the situation and secure the crash site.

The cause of the aircraft's sudden descent remains unknown.
