More than 70 people confirmed sick

August Egg Company, based in Hilmar, California, has recalled 1.7 million cartons of cage-free and certified organic brown eggs due to potential salmonella contamination, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced.

The eggs, distributed between February and May to grocery stores in California, Arizona, Nevada, Washington, Illinois, Indiana, Nebraska, New Mexico, and Wyoming  including Walmart locations  have been linked to a salmonella outbreak that has sickened at least 79 people across seven states. Of those, 21 required hospitalization, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

California reported the highest number of cases (63), while additional infections were confirmed in Nevada, Washington, Arizona, Nebraska, New Jersey, and Kentucky. Those affected range in age from 1 to 90 years old.

Following the discovery of the contamination risk, the company diverted all production from the affected facility to a separate egg-breaking plant, where eggs are pasteurized to eliminate pathogens. August Egg Company also announced an internal review to prevent future incidents.

Health officials urge consumers to discard or return the recalled eggs for a full refund.

In addition, a separate salmonella outbreak linked to cucumbers has sickened 45 people in 18 states, prompting recalls of salsas, vegetable trays, sushi, sandwiches, and whole cucumbers across multiple regions in the U.S.
