Health authorities are investigating the source of the outbreak as the product remains on the market and the manufacturer refuses to recall it

Seven people across multiple U.S. states have been infected with E. coli in an outbreak that health officials have linked to the consumption of a specific type of cheese. Despite this, the product’s manufacturer has chosen not to recall it.

The investigation was launched by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) after cases in California, Florida, and Texas were found to share the same strain of the bacteria. Of the seven confirmed cases, four involve children.

According to investigators, the three infected adults reported consuming RAW FARM brand raw cheddar cheese prior to falling ill. The FDA stated that epidemiological evidence indicates these products are the most likely source of the outbreak.

Cases were reported between September 2025 and mid-February of this year. Based on these findings, the FDA recommended that the company voluntarily remove its raw cheese products from the market.

However, the company declined the request.

Officials noted that no samples of the brand’s cheddar cheese have tested positive for E. coli so far. Nonetheless, the investigation remains ongoing, and additional testing is being conducted, with results still pending.

Five of the seven confirmed infections have been reported in California. Meanwhile, the CDC has urged consumers to consider avoiding these products as a precaution.

Company owner Mark McAfee said he will not recall the products without definitive evidence linking them directly to the illnesses. He also disputed the authorities’ findings, calling the outbreak announcement premature.

This is not the first time the company has faced a similar situation. In 2024, its raw cheddar cheese was also linked to an E. coli outbreak. At that time, the company initially agreed to a recall but later reversed its decision against CDC recommendations.

The current outbreak has resulted in two hospitalizations, though no deaths have been reported. The specific strain of E. coli under investigation can cause serious complications, including kidney problems, as well as common symptoms such as diarrhea, urinary tract infections, pneumonia, and sepsis.

Health authorities advise anyone experiencing symptoms to seek medical attention. Severe cases or adverse reactions can also be reported directly to the FDA through its official channels.
