The bacteria detected could cause serious and potentially life-threatening infections in newborns, young children, and people with weakened immune systems.

Thousands of families across the United States may be affected by a voluntary recall of several Up & Up brand baby wipes sold by Target after laboratory testing identified potential bacterial contamination.

The recall involves both Up & Up Fragrance Free Baby Wipes and Up & Up Fresh Cucumber Scented Baby Wipes, which were sold in Target stores nationwide and through the retailer’s website.

According to information released by the company and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), product samples tested positive for Burkholderia cepacia complex and Burkholderia gladioli, bacteria that can pose significant health risks.

Health officials warn that exposure to contaminated wipes could lead to serious infections. The greatest risk is for newborns, infants, young children, and individuals with compromised immune systems, whose bodies may be less able to fight off infection.

The recall notice states that healthy individuals may experience localized skin infections or irritation if the wipes are used on minor skin lesions. However, in vulnerable populations, the bacteria could enter the bloodstream and potentially cause severe complications such as sepsis or pneumonia, both of which can be life-threatening.

The investigation began after consumers reported discoloration in some of the products. Target and the manufacturer, Sapro Temizlik Urunleri, have also received reports of possible adverse health effects linked to the wipes, including skin irritation, eye irritation, and infections. Those reports remain under investigation.
