A freight train in Yellowstone plunged into a river, spilling asphalt and sulfur

A bridge located over Montana's Yellowstone River suffered an incident early Saturday morning, spilling hazardous substances from several railcars into the water, local Montana authorities said.

As Stillwater County Emergency Chief David Stamey announced that the train was carrying asphalt and sulfur in the cars, officials decided to partially shut off the drinking water supply to assess the situation.

David affirmed that there was no danger for the workers in the place, since the substances were diluted in the water of the river. "The train workers were safe and the fall of the bridge caused no injuries."

Several railcars were submerged in the river as railroad crews worked to repair nearby damage west of Billings in Stillwater County, Garland said.

“We are committed to resolving any potential impacts to the area as a result of this incident and are seeking to understand the causes of the accident,” Garland said.

Yellowstone officials maintained that emergency measures were taken at nearby drinking water plants to prevent a potential spill of hazardous materials that could affect the health of nearby residents.
