On Sunday, July 28, the family chapel of the “Dámaso” clan, located in El Dorado, Culiacán municipality, Sinaloa, was desecrated. During the incident, the bodies of Dámaso López García and Adolfo López Núñez were removed. They were the father and brother of Dámaso López Núñez, alias “El Licenciado.”

Dámaso López García passed away in 2007 from a heart attack, and Adolfo López Núñez was murdered in 2019 outside his home. This act of vandalism occurred a few days after the capture of Ismael Zambada García, alias “El Mayo,” and the alleged surrender of Joaquín Guzmán López, son of “Chapo Guzmán.”

The vandalism took place in a mausoleum approximately 20 by 40 meters, where broken slabs, open niches, and drag marks of the bodies being pulled outside were found. Only the body of Luis Fernando Gaxiola, Dámaso López’s brother-in-law and former syndic of Eldorado, remained.

Dámaso López Núñez, alias “El Licenciado,” was a significant ally of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, but their relationship deteriorated after Guzmán’s capture in 2016. López Núñez was arrested in 2017 and extradited to the United States, where he testified in Guzmán’s trial. His son, Dámaso López Serrano, also cooperated with U.S. authorities and is free in the United States.

The damage to the chapel has been widely circulated on social media, showing broken furniture, damaged windows, and open niches. The state attorney’s office has not yet filed a formal complaint.

The Dámaso family chapel is located in the municipality of Eldorado, 54 kilometers from Culiacán, in the Lorenzo Valley.
