Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office confirmed the detention of a former federal official under investigation for his alleged role in the 1994 assassination of the PRI presidential candidate.

Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office (FGR) has arrested in this border city a former federal security agent who was implicated in the investigation into the assassination of Luis Donaldo Colosio Murrieta, which took place more than three decades ago in Lomas Taurinas. This marks the second time the former official has been detained in connection with a case that became a turning point in Mexican politics.

Sources close to the case confirmed that the arrest was carried out under a court order stemming from new proceedings in the ongoing investigation. Authorities say fresh evidence has emerged that could help clarify the possible involvement of additional individuals in the security operation on March 23, 1994 the day the PRI presidential candidate was killed.

Although prosecutors have not publicly identified the detainee, reports suggest he is a former member of a federal intelligence agency who had previously been under investigation. Judicial analysts note that his re-arrest is part of efforts by prosecutors to revisit potential omissions and responsibilities surrounding the high-profile crime.

With this new arrest, the FGR seeks to revive one of the country’s most emblematic investigations, as public interest persists in uncovering whether Colosio was the victim of a lone gunman or a broader conspiracy that remains shrouded in mystery.
