Two people died in a head-on collision on Interstate 5 Wednesday morning, as reported by the California Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around 3:20 a.m. on southbound I-5 before Palomar Street in Chula Vista, CA.

Authorities believe the wrong-way driver was traveling at speeds between 80 and 90 mph in the fast lane.

Drivers initially began reporting the wrong-way driver in the Camino De La Plaza area, according to the California Highway Patrol. 

The collision was head-on and involved two vehicles, one of which was fully engulfed in flames, authorities explained. Both drivers died in the accident.

All southbound lanes were blocked for several hours due to the emergency response and cleanup efforts. Drivers were diverted at L Street while morning commuters experienced gridlocked traffic conditions in the area.

Lanes are now open for normal traffic flow.
