The homeowner is a 74-year-old man who had lived on the property for decades

Human remains were discovered in the yard of a home in the Southcrest neighborhood of San Diego, a finding that has shocked local residents. The incident occurred in the United States — not in Tijuana — despite speculation circulating on social media.

Authorities have identified Dwight William Rhone, a 74-year-old man who had lived for decades at the property located at 3443 Newton Ave., as a person of interest in the case. Rhone is already in custody and facing trial in a separate case: the killing of Bernardo Moreno in October 2023. Moreno’s body was found as crews extinguished a brush fire along Interstate 5 near State Route 905. After a lengthy investigation, Rhone was identified as the suspect and was arrested in December 2024. He is accused of shooting Moreno and then burning his body.
Court records show that Rhone has a lengthy criminal history spanning several decades, including multiple violent offenses, and has spent long periods behind bars.

So far, authorities have not confirmed who the recovered remains belong to or how long they may have been at the property. Although Rhone has been named a person of interest, he has not been formally charged in connection with this discovery.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the San Diego Police Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
