A student was taken into custody Wednesday morning in connection with the stabbing of a female classmate inside a classroom at San Ysidro High School, according to the San Diego Police Department.

The incident was reported around 9 a.m. at the campus on 5353 Airway Road. Authorities said the male student entered a classroom, stabbed the victim multiple times, and then fled.

Police said the girl was transported to a local hospital accompanied by school staff and law enforcement. Her injuries were described as non–life-threatening.

Investigators noted that surveillance cameras installed at the school last year captured images of the suspect on campus and were used to help locate him.

“We searched the campus and, near one of the last buildings we checked, we found the suspect,” SDPD Lt. César Jiménez said during a press briefing. “He was taken into custody without incident. He is a San Ysidro High School student.”

The suspect was found shortly before 11 a.m. in a campus building and detained without resistance. Police said he was carrying a knife and clothing believed to have been used in the attack.

The stabbing triggered a lockdown as officers searched the campus. Students and parents described tense moments as police units, K-9 teams, and a helicopter responded to the scene.

No other students were injured.
