Indigenous Peoples' Day, also known as Columbus Day, is celebrated on the second Monday of October. While many stores will remain open, there will be no postal service, and some banks will be closed.

President Joe Biden officially recognized Indigenous Peoples' Day in 2021 with a proclamation.

Governor Gavin Newsom has proclaimed the second Monday of October as Indigenous Peoples' Day in California for the past five years, and he is expected to do so again this year for the sixth time. According to Gov. Newsom, “California is home to the largest and most diverse Indigenous population prior to European contact, inheriting a rich Indigenous cultural legacy while also bearing responsibility for its historical role in the near-destruction of California Native peoples through their violent displacement."

For the past two years, the San Pasqual Band of Mission Indians has hosted an Indigenous Peoples' Day celebration at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. All tribal offices will be closed on Monday in observance of the holiday.

The Old Town San Diego State Historic Park features a Native American interpretive public gathering area for events and ceremonies. Named Iipay ~Tipai Kumeyaay Mut Niihepok (Land of the First People), it honors the Kumeyaay Nation's culture and its connection to the San Diego River and Old Town San Diego.

San Diego Miramar College's Student Affairs office is hosting an Indigenous Peoples' Day commemoration on Monday, October 14, from noon to 2 p.m. at Compass Point, with a free lunch and a performance by the Soaring Eagles.

In 2019, the San Diego Unified School Board passed a resolution to recognize Indigenous Peoples' Day, acknowledging that Indigenous peoples have long lived on the lands where San Diego is built.

While Indigenous Peoples' Day is not recognized as a school holiday in California, some districts, such as San Francisco Public Schools, do have the day off. Check your child's school calendar to see if they have the day off.
