Recently, there have been reports of private companies posing as public utility employees

Residents of San Diego have received "water update" notices in their homes. The city government has issued a warning to the public about these reports, which turn out to be a form of fraud to collect personal information. The alleged notices include a request that says "Please call us as soon as possible," which appears to come from a private company with no affiliation with the City of San Diego and is not authorized to perform any work on behalf of the city. In light of this, residents contacted by such a company are urged not to accept their services and, above all, not to provide personal information.

Recently, customers of the City's Public Utilities Department in the 92154 zip code have reported receiving potentially deceptive notices. Similar cases have also been reported in other cities and regions of the country.

The City's Public Utilities Department continuously conducts water quality tests, ensuring compliance with all state and federal quality regulations.

"We want to encourage our customers to be vigilant and verify the information sent to their homes," said Juan Guerreiro, Director of the Public Utilities Department. "Our teams are committed to customer safety and providing clean water to homes and businesses throughout San Diego. City staff will always identify themselves immediately; please contact the Public Utilities Department if you have any concerns about a notice left in your home."

The City of San Diego will never request access to your home to assess water quality. If you receive any notification, it will include the City's logo and be delivered by properly identified City personnel. The staff will be willing to show proper identification and provide the supervisor's phone number for verification.

Residents should verify any provided phone number to ensure its legitimacy. If someone claims to be a City employee and refuses to wait while the phone number is verified, this should be considered an attempted fraud. Please report any suspicious individuals immediately to the San Diego Police Department at their non-emergency 24-hour line at 619-531-2000 or to the Public Utilities Department's emergency hotline at 619-515-3525.

Customers of the Public Utilities Department can contact the City's Drinking Water Quality hotline at 619-668-3232 or email drinkingwaterquality@sandiego.gov during business hours.
