Police are investigating the case as a possible hate crime following Monday’s shooting
Five people were killed Monday after a shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego in what authorities are investigating as a possible hate crime.
The incident happened around noon at the Islamic Center located in the 7000 block of Eckstrom Avenue, where a large response from San Diego Police, SWAT teams, and emergency crews was deployed.
Hours later, police confirmed that three men were found dead outside the religious facility. In addition, two teenagers, ages 17 and 19, were found dead inside a vehicle on Hatton Street and are believed to be suspects in the attack. Authorities said at least one of them died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

One of the victims was identified as a security guard at the Islamic Center. Investigators continue working to determine what led to the shooting and establish a timeline of events.
Police also reported that a landscaping worker a few blocks away was shot at, but was not injured.
The FBI confirmed that President Donald Trump had been briefed on the situation.
Representatives from the Islamic Center said students and staff are safe, although the facility will remain closed for the rest of the day.
The police operation caused road closures in the area, including the I-805 off-ramps at Balboa Avenue. Authorities asked the public to avoid the area while the investigation continues.
Several schools within the San Diego Unified School District were also placed on lockdown as a precaution. Some restrictions were later lifted, while others remained in place through the afternoon.
