Budget cuts in San Diego will take 13 of the park's 28 public restrooms out of service

Visitors to Mission Bay, one of San Diego's most popular recreational parks, will have fewer public restroom options after the city closed half of the facilities as part of a cost-saving plan.

A total of 13 of the park's 28 public restrooms have been closed, forcing residents and tourists to walk longer distances to find available facilities, particularly during the busy summer season.

The closures are part of the City of San Diego's Fiscal Year 2026–2027 budget, which aims to reduce the city's financial deficit through cuts to various municipal services. According to the Independent Budget Analyst's Office, the move is expected to save approximately $547,000 annually in operating and maintenance costs.

In addition to the permanent restroom closures, the city also removed half of the portable toilets located on Fiesta Island, another popular recreation area within Mission Bay.

The decision has drawn criticism from frequent park users, who argue that the reduction in restroom access will disproportionately affect families with young children, older adults, and people with limited mobility. Many visitors also warn that the remaining facilities may not be sufficient to meet demand during weekends and peak summer months.

To help visitors locate available restrooms, the city has posted notices on the closed facilities with QR codes linking to an updated map showing which restrooms remain open.

While city officials say the cuts are necessary to improve San Diego's financial outlook, the closures have renewed concerns about the impact of budget reductions on essential public services at one of the city's busiest outdoor destinations.
