Authorities increase vigilance amid concerns of a potential Iranian drone retaliation targeting unspecified locations in the state.

The FBI has warned police departments in California about the possibility of a drone attack by Iran in retaliation for U.S. military actions, according to ABC News.

According to an alert distributed in late February, the agency obtained information indicating that Iran may have considered launching a surprise attack using unmanned aerial vehicles from a vessel off the U.S. coast, with potential targets in California that remain unspecified. Authorities said there are no confirmed details about the timing, method, or specific targets of the alleged plan.

The warning comes amid escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran, as Iran has carried out drone strikes across different parts of the Middle East.

In response, the office of Governor Gavin Newsom said state agencies are working with local and federal authorities to strengthen security and protect communities.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said it is maintaining an elevated level of readiness, including increased patrols around places of worship, cultural institutions, and other high profile locations.

Security experts cited by ABC News also warned about growing concerns among U.S. officials regarding the expanding use of drones by Mexican drug cartels, which could represent another potential threat along the U.S.–Mexico border region.
