Strengthen security cooperation

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and her U.S. counterpart, Donald Trump, held a phone call to reaffirm their commitment to bilateral cooperation on key issues such as migration, security, and trade. During their conversation, both leaders highlighted recent progress and announced an extension on the implementation of tariffs on Mexican products until April 2.

Through her social media accounts, Sheinbaum thanked Trump for the respectful tone of their dialogue and welcomed the agreement, emphasizing that “our work and collaboration have yielded unprecedented results, within the framework of respect for our sovereignties.” The Mexican president also confirmed that both nations will continue coordinating efforts to combat fentanyl trafficking into the United States and the flow of illegal weapons into Mexico.

For his part, Trump confirmed the decision on his Truth Social platform, stating that Mexico will not have to pay tariffs on products covered under the USMCA until the agreed date. “I am doing this as a courtesy and out of respect for President Sheinbaum. Our relationship has been very good, and we are working hard together at the border, both in terms of stopping the illegal entry of foreigners into the United States and in the fight against fentanyl,” the U.S. president said.

The agreement is part of a broader cooperation strategy aimed at addressing shared challenges without disrupting bilateral trade. However, Trump made it clear that after April 2, his administration will announce reciprocal tariffs for all countries, leaving uncertainty about the future of Mexican exports.
